The Sunkiya Community Homestays project is a rural tourism initiative led by the women of Sunkiya, a peaceful Kumaoni village in Uttarakhand. Inspired by the spirit of Ghasyari, it celebrates the hard work and resilience of local women with their vision that holds the Himalayan economy on its shoulders, nourishes and unites communities, preserving the ancestral way of life in harmony with water, forest, and land. The project aims to create sustainable eco-tourism and provide meaningful livelihood opportunities in the village. Visitors can experience slow mountain life through local food, farming, traditions, and culture. Each homestay is managed by the women of the village, enabling them to achieve financial independence, strengthen their confidence, and develop as rural entrepreneurs.

A key strength of the project is its sensitive, deliberate approach to upgrading traditional village homes through subtle, well-considered improvements that respect and preserve their original architectural character. Existing mud walls, timber beams, and stone flooring are carefully sustained, while modern interventions are incorporated only to enhance safety and comfort. This approach results in spaces that feel renewed yet remain deeply rooted in their cultural context. The thoughtful balance between traditional building techniques and contemporary solutions allows visitors to experience authentic Kumaoni living.

The design enriches a palette of calm, natural colours and materials sourced locally. Red oxide flooring brings a warm and earthy presence, while local patal stone and indigenous wood lend texture, durability, and visual harmony. These materials integrate seamlessly into the traditional setting and help maintain an atmosphere of simplicity and tranquility.

The engagement of local villagers, along with their craftsmanship, lived knowledge, and deep understanding of traditional practices enrich the design process with cultural depth and authenticity. Local art forms like Aipan are thoughtfully incorporated, imparting narrative depth and fine artisanal character to the spaces. This collaborative process not only preserves local heritage but also cultivates a strong sense of community pride and collective ownership in the transformation.
